Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay started to discover her artistic and creative talents as a child, thanks to Aunt Denise. DuVernay worked as a night nurse to allow her mother the time she needed throughout the day to indulge in the passion of art, literature, as well as theatre. DuVernay fell in love with the 1961 movie West Side Story after her aunt showed the film to DuVernay. DuVernay was taught by her mother that art can be used to promote activism. DuVernay was trained by her mother, who was a social sassy and pushed DuVernay to express herself through art. DuVernay resided in Compton for most of her childhood, but she would spend every summer with the extended family of her father living in Lowndes County Alabama. Her father was awed by the historic Civil Rights march through the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in the nearby town of Selma Alabama. The DuVernay family visited Selma over the summers and was later in awe of the idea to film on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay received her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. In the year 1990 she was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. DuVernay discovered a passion for broadcast journalism as a student. She was an intern with CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was able to recall being assigned the task of watching the house and examining the trash from one of the jury. Following her disappointment with journalism by the tasks she was handed she decided to pursue an interest in public relations. DuVernay started her first job as a publicity specialist in an unassuming production studio straight out of high school. Her first venture was The DuVernay Agency, her PR firm, in 1999. The agency was the first to launch a variety of promotions and lifestyle channels which include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
